This Brass thread reducer allows you use accessories that have a 1/4" 20 threads per inch spud with a 3/8-16 threaded receptacle. Commonly used with cameras like Hasselblads to attach them to common tripods with 1/4-20 spuds.

Brass is proffered to steel because it won't rust, corrode, or fuse with the steel parts it comes in contact with. 5/16" deep.
