Schneider Optics Color Correction Filters
81EF 68-108244 and 85 68-038544.
Color Correction filters serve two key functions: they change the color content of the light to match the color response of the film, and they permit the user to creatively modify color in subtle ways.
Encompassing a wide range of colors and densities, color correction filters are categorized into three main groups: Color Conversion, Light Balancing, and Color Compensating. Each can create a wealth of practical color-temperature corrections and excitingly creative color effects.
Two of the most often used color correction filters are the 85 and the 81EF.
Although today’s film emulsions provide the cinematographer with great latitude and flexibility, the 85 still remains the industry’s most commonly used color conversion filter. The 85 is primarily used to correct the color of tungsten balanced film when shooting in daylight. By combining an 81EF with an 85, over-correction is achieved which results in a warm look.
Sometimes a Director of Photography may prefer to use an 81EF rather than an 85. When used alone in daylight, this filter under-corrects tungsten balanced film and provides a cool or bluish look.
However, if an 81EF is used with tungsten balanced film in tungsten light, it results in a warm look.
Schneider has been careful to match both of these filters to their respective Kodak Wratten numbers. They are available in the following sizes: Series 9, 41/2", 138mm, 4"x4", 4"x4.560" (Panavision size) and 6.6"x6.6".
Schneider’s 81 Series For Skin Tones.
As a result of many inquiries, Schneider recently introduced two new warming filters: the 81-One and the 81-Two. Born from the 81-A, both filters are designed to add warmth to skin tones and reduce excessive blue in outdoor open shade.
The 81-Two is used to accentuate skin tones for a warmer appearance. For a subject with darker skin tones, the 81-One is more appropriate.
Ideal for romantic close-ups, the 81 Series can be combined with softening filters.
Combination filters are the blending of two or more filter effects into one filter. Their big advantage is that they permit cinematographers to have less glass in front of their lenses. This is particularly useful when you want to use several filters simultaneously. When more filter effects are needed than can be used in a two or three slot matte box, combination filters make it possible.
Schneider’s first series of combination filters are the 85 Neutral Densities. They are precision ground and polished to a perfect flatness and parallel thickness, and feature Schneider’s unique Edge Seal, which prevents edge-chipping and delamination, and also reduces edge-reflections and flare.
Schneider is currently designing several other combination filters including the 85/True-Pol and the 81EF/True-Pol.
