Sony G Master · Full-frame E-mount

Sony FE 100-400mm GM OSS: 400mm of reach you can hand-hold all day

The Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS (SEL100400GM) is the long end of a working full-frame E-mount package. This G Master super-telephoto zoom holds resolution corner to corner through the whole range, focuses to 0.98 m at any focal length, and weighs 1,395 g with the collar off — light enough that it goes on the shoulder instead of staying in the case. The 77mm front thread takes filters you already own, and both Sony teleconverters push it to 800mm.

01 · Reach

What the focal range actually gets you

Zoom numbers are abstract until you see the frame shrink. The scale below is linear in millimetres: the solid section is the lens on its own, the dashed section is what the SEL14TC and SEL20TC teleconverters add.

Angle of view, drawn to scale

Each rectangle is the full-frame field at that focal length, nested inside the 100mm frame.

On an APS-C body the same lens frames like a 150–600mm, narrowing to 16°–4°.

Subject size, relative to 100mm

How large a distant subject renders in frame at a fixed camera position.

  • 100 mm1.0×
  • 200 mm2.0×
  • 300 mm3.0×
  • 400 mm4.0×
  • 560 mm5.6×
  • 800 mm8.0×

02 · Exposure

Two-thirds of a stop, end to end

A variable aperture is the trade that keeps this lens under 1.4 kg. In practice the exposure shift across the zoom is small enough to ride out in auto ISO, and the 9-blade circular diaphragm keeps out-of-focus highlights round as you stop down. Aperture closes to f/32 at the wide end and f/40 at 400mm.

03 · Optics

G Master glass, 22 elements in 16 groups

Cross-section diagram of the SEL100400GM optical formula showing 22 elements in 16 groups, with the Super ED and ED elements highlighted
Optical layout — one Super ED and two ED elements sit in the forward groups
  • Super ED and ED elements

One Super ED plus two ED elements pull the colour channels back together at the long end, where chromatic aberration normally shows up as fringing on high-contrast edges — backlit hair, white uniforms, bare branches against sky.

  • Nano AR coating

Suppresses the internal reflections that cause flare and ghosting, so shooting toward a low sun or into stadium lights holds contrast instead of washing out.

  • 9-blade circular diaphragm

Keeps specular highlights round rather than faceted through the working aperture range — the difference between clean background separation and busy, edgy bokeh at 400mm.

  • Fluorine-coated front element

Water, oil and fingerprints sit on the surface instead of bonding to it. Front-element cleaning between setups takes one pass.

04 · Autofocus

Double linear motors plus Direct Drive SSM

A floating focus group driven by two motor systems — double linear motors and a Direct Drive SSM actuator — moves the groups independently and quietly. That combination is what lets the lens hold resolution across the focus range rather than only at infinity, and it tracks fast enough for birds in flight and sideline sport.

A focus range limiter cuts the hunting distance when you know your subject stays far, and three focus-hold buttons around the barrel fall under the thumb in any orientation. Assign them in the camera menu to focus hold, AF area, Eye AF lock or anything else the body offers.

Close focus at any focal length. 0.98 m minimum focus distance with up to 0.35× magnification — unusually tight for a super-telephoto, and enough to shoot detail inserts and small subjects without swapping to a macro.

05 · Stabilization

Optical SteadyShot, with a panning mode

OSS runs in two modes. Mode 1 corrects on both axes for static handheld work. Mode 2 releases the horizontal axis so a pan stays smooth while vertical shake is still corrected — the setting you want for track, motorsport and anything crossing the frame. On Alpha bodies with in-body stabilization the lens and sensor systems work together for 5-axis compensation.

Balanced far enough back that hand-holding at 400mm stays practical

06 · Teleconverters

Take it to 800mm without changing lenses

This is one of the few Sony zooms that accepts the FE teleconverters, and autofocus and auto-exposure both stay live.

Effective focal length and maximum aperture
Configuration Focal length Max aperture APS-C equivalent
Lens alone 100–400mm f/4.5–5.6 150–600mm
With SEL14TC (1.4×) 140–560mm f/6.3–8 210–840mm
With SEL20TC (2×) 200–800mm f/9–11 300–1200mm

Effective apertures at the long end land at f/8 and f/11 — check them against your body's autofocus specification if you shoot in low light.

07 · Handling

    [2] Focus hold button
    [3] Zooming ring
    [4] Focus-mode/range switch
    [5] SteadyShot switch
    [6] Zoom lock switch
  • Zoom torque ring

A dedicated ring sets how much resistance the zoom has. Loose for fast racks and hand-held tracking, tight to stop the barrel creeping when the lens points down. This was a first on the Alpha system.

  • Removable rotating collar

Rotate between horizontal and vertical without breaking the rig, or pull the collar off entirely for hand-held work and packing. A lock stops it coming away by accident.

  • ALC-SH151 hood

Includes a lock switch so it can't detach or spin, plus a sliding window for adjusting rotating filters — polarizers and variable NDs — without pulling the hood off.

  • Dust and moisture resistant

Sealed through the barrel and at the mount. Rated for the light rain and blowing grit that come with field and sideline work, not for submersion.

08 · On the job

Where it earns its place in the kit

Wildlife and nature units

Reach plus 0.98 m close focus covers the same day's work from a distant animal to an insert of a track or a feather.

Sport and action

OSS Mode 2 for pans, dual-motor AF for subjects coming straight at camera, and a weight that survives a full match handheld.

Documentary and observational

Long-lens coverage from far enough back that the subject forgets the camera, with quiet focus that stays out of the audio track.

Second unit and safety distance

Tight coverage of stunts, pyro and vehicle work from outside the perimeter, without a prime's fixed framing.

Events and concerts

Stage-to-back-of-house reach in one lens, with a 77mm thread that shares filters with the rest of a Sony package.

Travel and expedition

At 205 mm long with the collar removed, it packs where a 600mm prime does not.

09 · Compare

Sony 100-400mm GM vs 200-600mm G: which super-telephoto?

These are the two Sony super-telephoto zooms most buyers cross-shop. The short version: the 100-400mm GM is the one you carry, the 200-600mm G is the one you set up. If you shoot from a fixed position and want maximum reach for the money, take the 200-600. If your day includes walking, travel and focal lengths below 200mm, take the 100-400.

10 · Questions

Sony FE 100-400mm GM OSS: common questions

Does the Sony 100-400mm GM work with teleconverters?

Yes. It accepts both the Sony SEL14TC (1.4×) and SEL20TC (2×), and keeps autofocus and auto-exposure with either. The 1.4× gives you 140–560mm at f/6.3–8; the 2× gives you 200–800mm at f/9–11. This is one of the few Sony zooms that takes them, and it is the main reason the lens stays in kits alongside longer primes.

What filter size does the Sony FE 100-400mm GM take?

77mm front thread — the same size used across much of the Sony G Master line, so filters travel between lenses. The ALC-SH151 hood has a sliding access window, so you can rotate a circular polarizer or variable ND without pulling the hood off.

Should I buy the Sony 100-400mm GM or the 200-600mm G?

Buy the 100-400mm GM if you move while you shoot. It is 720 g lighter, 113 mm shorter, focuses to 0.98 m instead of 2.4 m, and covers the 100–200mm range the 200-600 does not. Buy the 200-600mm G if you work from a fixed position — a hide, a sideline, a tripod — and want 600mm natively with an internal zoom that keeps the balance constant.

Does it work on APS-C bodies like the a6700 or FX30?

Yes. It mounts and functions normally on Sony APS-C E-mount bodies, where the crop makes it frame like a 150–600mm lens. Add the 2× teleconverter and the effective framing reaches 1200mm.

Is the Sony 100-400mm GM good for video?

It works well for long-lens documentary and event coverage: focus is quiet enough to stay out of the audio track, and OSS Mode 2 keeps pans smooth. Be aware it is a stills-first design — the barrel extends as you zoom, it is not parfocal, and it has visible focus breathing. For controlled narrative work a cine zoom is the right tool; for run-and-gun reach, this is a practical choice.

Is it weather sealed?

It is dust and moisture resistant, with sealing through the barrel and a rubber gasket at the mount, plus a fluorine coating on the front element that stops water and oil bonding to the glass. That covers light rain, spray and blowing grit. It is not waterproof and should not be submerged.

How close can it focus?

0.98 m (3.22 ft) at any focal length, for up to 0.35× magnification — unusually tight for a super-telephoto and close enough to shoot detail inserts without switching to a macro lens.
