Designed for filmmakers, cinematographers, commercial creators, documentary shooters, and production companies, the FX5 combines a compact Cinema Line body with a newly developed 16.6MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor, BIONZ XR2 processing, integrated AI processing, internal X-OCN recording, and professional monitoring tools.

The FX5 sits between Sony's compact FX3 and production-oriented FX6, delivering a highly mobile filmmaking platform without giving up the advanced image quality and workflow features expected from a dedicated cinema camera. Its 5K Open Gate 3:2 recording provides maximum sensor-area flexibility for reframing, visual effects, and multiple delivery formats, while internal X-OCN preserves extensive tonal and color information for demanding post-production workflows.

5K Full-Frame Stacked Sensor

At the heart of the FX5 is a newly developed 16.6MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor with a resolution of 4992 x 3328. The stacked architecture enables fast sensor readout while helping reduce rolling-shutter artifacts. Combined with Sony's Cinema Line color science, the sensor is designed to deliver natural tonal transitions, highlight retention, and cinematic color reproduction.

Internal 16-Bit X-OCN Recording

The FX5 brings Sony's X-OCN raw-based workflow into a compact FX-series camera. Internal recording supports X-OCN LT, X-OCN C1, and X-OCN C2, including 5K Open Gate recording up to 59.94 fps. X-OCN provides the flexibility of a raw workflow while using advanced compression to create more manageable files for professional editing and post-production.

Open Gate recording uses the full 3:2 sensor area, giving filmmakers additional flexibility for reframing, visual effects, vertical deliveries, and other aspect-ratio requirements.

Triple Base ISO and More Than 16 Stops of Dynamic Range

With three base ISO settings of 800, 4000, and 12800, the FX5 is designed to adapt to changing lighting conditions. Its dual-gain architecture provides more than 16 stops of dynamic range, helping retain detail in both highlights and shadows across challenging exposures.

AI-Powered Autofocus and White Balance

The BIONZ XR2 processor and integrated AI processing unit provide advanced subject recognition autofocus and AI-assisted automatic white balance. The system can recognize people, birds, and animals while maintaining focus as subjects move through the frame, making the FX5 well suited to documentary, commercial, event, and handheld filmmaking.

Advanced Monitoring and Cinema Controls

A large 3.5-inch 16:9 four-axis multi-angle touchscreen LCD provides flexible monitoring from high, low, and unconventional shooting positions. The cinema-focused BIG 6 menu system, redesigned controls, six assignable custom buttons, and multifunction control dial provide quick access to frequently used settings.

Professional monitoring tools include waveform, vectorscope, false color, histogram, zebra, peaking, focus map, and anamorphic de-squeeze. A full-size HDMI output provides professional monitoring and recording flexibility.

5-Axis In-Body Image Stabilization

The FX5 features 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization for smoother handheld shooting. Enhanced roll correction and Dynamic Active electronic stabilization provide additional support when shooting handheld, on the move, or in situations where a tripod or external stabilization system is impractical.

Professional Connectivity and Expandable Workflow

The FX5 includes two USB-C ports, full-size HDMI, Ethernet, microphone and headphone connections, dual CFexpress Type A/SDXC UHS-II card slots, and an Intelligent Hot Shoe. Timecode compatibility supports synchronization for multicamera productions and professional workflows.

The optional Sony XLR-H2 Handle Unit adds two XLR inputs and 32-bit float audio recording capability. The optional DVF-EL1 Electronic Viewfinder provides an additional high-quality monitoring solution for bright environments and handheld operation.

Built for Mobile Cinema Production

With a compact magnesium-alloy body weighing approximately 26 oz / 750 g, the FX5 is designed for productions that move between handheld, gimbal, studio, documentary, commercial, and narrative applications. Its compact form factor provides the mobility needed for fast-moving productions while retaining the control and workflow flexibility of a dedicated cinema camera.
